Rhinocéros de Cour Royale (maquillé comme une voiture volée)
Manuel Ier du Portugal offre en 1516 un rhinocéros au pape Lèon X. Il navigue dans une Nef qui s’arrête un temps sur l’île du château d’If. François Ier, en pèlerinage à la Sainte-Baume, vint le voir. Comme on peut l’imaginer François Ier ne resta pas insensible devant cet animal surprenant et rare d’une beauté provocante et voulu le racheter à Manuel… Mais la Nef repris sa route et fit naufrage dans le golfe de Gênes et le rhinocéros arriva chez le pape mais empaillé.

In 1516, Manuel the First, King of Portugal, sent a rhino as a gift to Pope Leon the Tenth. It sailed on a ship that docked for a while on the island of the Castle of If. French King Francis the First, then on a pilgrimage at the Sainte-Baume, came to see it. The King was amazed by the awesome beauty of this rare and astounding animal, and he tried to buy it. But Manuel refused, and the ship went on, before sinking in the Gulf of Genoa. The rhino eventually arrived at the Pope's palace… stuffed!
