The literature provided by the museum explained that the largest number of designs on view in this exhibition were geometric pieced patterns such as combinations of rectangles, diamonds, triangles and circles that were joined together to form the top layer of the quilt which also included a filling (or batting) and a backing fabric. The literature also said that applique designs made of cut out pieces of one fabric sewn on top of another fabric were not limited to geomagnetic patterns. The applique designs would feature animals, flowers, hearts, and similar cutouts applied using the basic applique method. Some quilts made for fund raising had donors' names embroidered in red threads on white fabrics that are made into quilts.
Other designs were developed later and did not fit into the above categories.
