A close up view of withdrawn British Airways Trident 2E G-AVFK which was being stripped at London Heathrow
Trident Swansong 1980 - 1985
On the day before my 20th birthday, I was wandering around the maintenance area at my home airport of London Heathrow. I took this shot through the old chain-link fence - hence the rather tight crop :) The following day I was up early for the drive to Mildenhall Air fete - and by the day after that, I was on a ship heading for Scandinavia!
Originally delivered to BEA in Jan 1969, G-AVFK - a Trident 2E in the later 'British' livery of British Airways, seen parked in the old BEA maintenance area at London Heathrow. The aircraft was one of the first Trident 2s to be taken out of service, being withdrawn the previous December, and was in the final stages of being stripped for spare parts before final scrapping commenced. Unlike with some of the Tridents dismantled here, the windows are still in place, but all the engines have been removed. The casing for the fourth 'booster' engine can be clearly seen under the rudder.
G-AVFK c/n 2150 - Trident 2E - delivered new to BEA in Jan 1969, and incorporated into the British Airways fleet some five years later. The aircraft flew with BA for another seven years, before being withdrawn in Sep1981. The aircraft was stripped of useful parts at London Heathrow and broken up there in May 1982.
