London Gatwick Airport Panorama 6 close up

A close up view from the roof terrace

In the 1970s, Gatwick had a dedicated viewing area on the roof of the only terminal building. It was used by flyers, relatives and plane spotters alike, and it even had a café and fountains! Here is a typical scene from one of my early visits, armed with my Kodak Instamatic camera.

And another time capsule line up from the heady 1970s. The exotic aircraft that I was actually shooting this time was the exotic Swissair DC-10 seen on push back in the distance. The limitations of my Instamatic camera have actually provided a great record of Gatwick in the 1970s, as seen from the roof terrace viewing area. Also captured are as follows: British Airtours Boeing 707 with a white tail, a couple of Dan Air Comets, a couple of British Caledonian Boeing 707s, and last but not least, a pair of Tradewinds CL-44 swing-tail freighters.

Taken with my basic Kodak Instamatic using 126 cartridge film.
