Gullfoss Waterfall, Iceland
Known as one of Europe's most powerful waterfalls, Gullfoss was pegged during the early 20th century as a potential future electricity source. The waterfall was rented to foreign investors by its owners, Tomas Tomasson and Halldor Halldorsson. Locals tell the story of Sigridur Tomssdottir, the daughter of Tomasson, saving the waterfall from its intended use, and hence potential disfiguration, by picketing the investors' efforts and eventually even threatening to throw herself into the falls. The story may be partially legendary but remains a part of local tradition, with a stone memorial to Sigridur placed at the top of the falls.
