Lighting Diagram - Monica in studio

How it was shot

The Lastolite Tri-lite reflector kit does a great job at softening the shadows and providing nice fill light for this type of shot. The background was a tool of white seamless paper. I started with the main light which was the Elinchrom 39" deep octa. For this type of shot I wanted nice soft light so I left both diffusion panels in place. The octa was placed with the center of the box about 1 foot above her head on a normal stand pointing down at about a 30 degree angle. It was brought in to within about 3 ft of her. I then placed the Tri-lite about chest high on a stand and then adjusted the arms to position the panels to provide a nice amount of fill.

The nice thing about the set is you can use the arms to move the panels around until you get the look you are going for. I use it often with just 1 panel in place as well. When positioning the reflector set I will set in to where the model is being place and I will test fire the main light to make sure the light is reflecting off all three panels. You can test shoot the model as well to see how the light is being reflected.

Once the main light and reflector were in place, I metered the light to read F/16. I was shooting with the Sigma 180mm macro up fairly close. Knowing how shallow this lens can be, I wanted to make sure all of her face and hair would be in focus. I shot through a small space between under the main light to capture the shot

The background lights were metered to about 1/2 stop to a stop higher than the main light to create a nice white background. They had 7" reflectors on angles to the background as you see in the diagram.

Main light was the Elinchrom Ranger RX/AS with and "S" head and the background lights were two Elinchrom 600rx's. Everything was controlled wireless with the Elinchrom Skyports.
