boer war memorial

The memorial, erected in St Anne's Square, consists of a group of two soldiers as in the midst of hand-to hand fighting; one of them down on the ground, wounded, resting on one hand, while with the other he hands his last cartridge to his brave and stalwart comrade, who stands above with firmly planted feet and tightly gripped rifle in the action of defence. The figures, which have been taken from life (two men of the Manchester Regt ), are of heroic size, 6 ft, 8 in, high and they are placed on a rocky plinth 2 ft, 6in deep. The group, therefore, is about nine feet in height. It is placed on a granite pedestal, which has been enriched with panels inscribed with the names of the Officers, Non Commissioned Officers and Men from the district who fell in the South African War. The whole Monument stands about nineteen feet from the ground level to the top of the soldier's head, and is 14 ft square. The group which is the work of Mr. Hamo Thornycroft, R.A. has been cast in bronze by Messrs, Singer of Frome. The plinth and pedestal are of grey granite, and have been executed by Messrs Kirkpatrick Brothers of Trafford Park Manchester.

On the eight tablets two on each face are recorded the names of 309, Men & 8 Officers.

The Memorial was unveiled by Gen Sir Ian Hamilton, KCB, on 26th Oct 1908.
