Zierfische
[Ornamental fish]
The famous neon script, when it was still installed at its original place, on the facade of a pet shop at Frankfurter Tor. This piece of lettering was designed by signpainter Manfred Gensicke in the early 1980s.
When the shop closed its doors in 2009, the ‘Zierfische’ unfortunately had to go, too, and subsequently found a new home at the Buchstabenmuseum [Museum of Letters].
Recently, the characteristic design has been digitized by Dirk Heider, with the support and input of Gensicke himself. Missing letters were added, and a ton of ligatures were drawn. The font has been published now under the name Zierfische, and can be licensed via Veer.
Typografie.info has an extensive article, with lots of great images (in German).
