VM Plymouth @ McCook IL Quarry (1985)

Vulcan Materials 1958 40-ton Plymouth

The McCook-Hodgkins limestone quarry covers over six hundred acres and produces seven million tons of crushed stone per year. The site began operations back in the 1860's as the United States Crushed Stone Co. The site is currently operated by the Vulcan Materials Co. which acquired it in the 1970's.

Today, the mined out portions of the quarry are serving a second life as a repository for rain water as part of the Deep Tunnel project. Stage one of the project at the McCook quarry was completed on December 31, 2017 providing flood storage of 3.5 billion gallons. Stage 2 of the reservoir, with a storage volume of 6.5 billion gallons, is scheduled to be completed in 2029.
