CSL 30 (EMD SW1500) near 100th St, Chicago IL (1984)

The Chicago Short Line Railway Co (reporting mark CSL) was a switching line operating 28 miles of track from South Chicago, Illinois to Indiana Harbor, Indiana. The railroad owns four diesel engines: two EMD SW1001's, numbered 28 and 29, and two EMD SW1500's, numbered 30 and 31. In the photo, CSL 30 i pulling a load of covered coil cars eastbound with the elevated Chicago Skyway in the background. Coil cars are a specialized type of rolling stock designed for the transport of coils (i.e., rolls) of sheet metal, particularly steel. The body of a coil car consists of a trough or series of troughs. The coils are set on their sides in the trough, and stops may be applied across the trough to keep the coils from shifting. The cars are equipped with hoods to cover the load.

In 2003, the Chicago Short Line became the South Chicago and Indiana Harbor railroad. In 2020, the C&IH was acquired by Cleveland-Cliffs.
