Trains Don't Stop Here Anymore (C&NW Mayfair)

Remains of the station platform from the Chicago & Northwestern's Mayfair Station on Montrose Ave. in Chicago IL which was closed on December 1, 1958. The station itself was below the platform built into the viaduct when the tracks were elevated in the late 1920's.

The closure was part of a plan by the C&NW to raise fares (24%) and close 22 close-in stations in Chicago and the near suburbs in an attempt to make suburban passenger operations more profitable (these operations lost $2.1 million in 1956). C&NW estimated that 2300 passengers per day would lose their service, but most could switch to using the CTA as an alternative. While city officials, the rail unions, and neighborhood groups opposed the plan, the Illinois Commerce Commission approved it.

The building in the background is the former Charles Brunning Co. facility (manufacturer of drafting supplies and copy machinery for small to mid-size printing operations). In 1941, Bruning built a factory at 4700 W. Montrose. Victor L. Charn was the architect of the Art Moderne structure. In 1956, Brunning moved his operations to Mount Prospect, Il and the building has had a variety of occupants since then, but still survives to this day unlike the C&NW's station at Mayfair.
