Peabody Coal 23 (Lima Hamilton LS-750)

No. 23, an LS-750, was built by Lima-Hamilton (Spec. No. A-3149) in April 1950, #9399, as Cincinnati Union Terminal Co 23. It was sold to George R Silcott Co and then to Peabody in 1969 as 23.

The LS-750 is a 750 horsepower switcher. It has a turbocharged Hamilton T-69-SA four-stroke, six cylinder inline diesel engine, a Westinghouse generator and 4 Westinghouse traction motors. All six LS-750's were sold to a single railroad, Cincinnati Union Terminal Co.

Steam locomotive builder Lima was a late entrant to diesel production merging with diesel engine producer Hamilton in

1947 and not producing its first locomotive until 1949. The company merged with Baldwin in late 1950 and the Lima Hamilton line was eliminated in 1951 in favor of Baldwin's locomotive designs. The company's switchers, made in four horsepower ratings (e.g., 750, 800, 100, 1250), had no model numbers, but railfans identify them as LS followed by the horsepower rating.

Only one LS-750 survives, the former Cincinnati Union Terminal 25, is currently operated by the Whitewater Valley Railroad
