Heritage Depot, Golden CO, 9-3-1981
This quaint compact depot was a stop on the High Country RR that ran around Heritage Square in the 1960s through the 1980s. Heritage Square was a Storybook Victorian theme park shopping village at Golden, Colorado. It was originally built as Magic Mountain in 1957-59. It was the earliest known attempt to spread the theme park concept beyond Disneyland.
When Magic Mountain collapsed in 1960, it was eventually reopened as Heritage Square in 1971. It featured a collection of artisan shops, children's rides, the second alpine slide outside a ski resort in North America, the Heritage Square Music Hall, the narrow gauge train, and more. Heritage Square closed at the end of 2015 and the area is scheduled for redevelopment, but the amusement park rides will remain.
When this picture was taken, the High Country RR was a 1.5-mile long two foot narrow gauge line around the perimeter of the Square operating a 1920 Lima Shay locomotive. They also had a Henschel 0-4-0T and a Hartmann 0-8-0. As the sign indicates the fare to ride back then was $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children ages 5-12.
