City of Yarra introduced centre-planted trees along Gold St in Collingwood. While attractive, this creates more dangerous conditions for people on bikes. Previously, cyclists would (wisely) ride away from the door zone, about where the outer-strip of the bike lane is. The road was wide enough that motor vehicles would just use the full width of the road to leave appropriate over-taking space. I would commonly ride side-by-side with my wife, people would overtake us, no aggravation, everyone getting along just fine. This is no longer possible. Not only is there no width to ride two-abreast, cyclists are now forced in to the 'door zone' which causes many catastrophic injuries for cyclists in Melbourne. It also forces drivers into close proximity to cyclists where previously they could leave ample room (hey 1-metre law should be applied to INFRASTRUCTURE). This contravenes 8-to-80 principle, no one wants to see school kids ride along here within cms of SUVs passing.
