Abandoned Church

Hill County, Montana

Ruth Ann and I took about a three-week road trip recently, primarily for a visit with my older brother and sister-in-law, as well as several other family members in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; the gathering included Nancy and Arturo (my older daughter and her husband), whom we hadn't seen since we visited in Seattle two years ago. Since we were going so far west, we included several days in Yellowstone. The second day of our drive from Saskatoon to Yellowstone, not long after crossing into Montana, I spotted this abandoned church west of our road (Route 232, Wild Horse Trail), and I had to stop. With no windows or door, swallows seemed to have taken over the building. The two dark boards right of the entrance are the remains of a sign, which indicated the building served several purposes in its early years, but apparently none in many decades: "First school 1912 / Cottonwood Hall 1914 / Catholic Churche [sic.] 1928 / Lutheran 1922 / First Presbyterian 1915". My photo session ended abruptly when I saw a snake in the grass, where I was headed for a different perspective; it was green with yellow bars across its back, roughly four feet long, and unknown to me -- and I didn't stick around to get acquainted.
