Big Run Falls

Big Run Falls on Big Run Creek

Monongahela National Forest

Tucker County, West Virginia

This beautiful setting was one of the venues visited during last week's Potomac Highlands Photography Workshop offered by Randall Sanger Photography, with Todd Williams as co-leader. I love the seclusion of this setting, and the caramel coloring the tannins give the water. The workshop was a great experience, thanks to the knowledge and helpfulness of the leaders, and the cooperation and courtesy of the other participants. Thanks to Randy and Todd, I now am comfortable with using Live View in my shooting (it uses more battery power, but it's much easier on the back in composing many shots). The weather wasn't as cooperative as we had hoped -- fog all three mornings and heavy clouds for two, so no good sunrises -- but the many attractions of Tucker County (Canaan Valley Resort State Park, Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Dolly Sods Wilderness, among others) provided good shooting opportunities each day. And now my backlog is several hundred photos larger. I'd like to return to this waterfall, but I would be somewhat reluctant to drive my vehicle over forest road 18; although it starts out fine, the good gravel section abruptly gives way to an extremely rough section with wide, deep potholes and many rocks.
