Lucia Buns - Adding Milk to Butter

Today (December 13) is St. Lucia Day, which marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Scandinavia. In the morning, Lucia appears in the doorway, dressed in white, wearing a crown of candles, singing "Santa Lucia," and carrying coffee and Lucia Buns. The buns are made with Saffron, one of the most expensive spices in the world (saffron is hand-picked from the crocus flower). I'd never made Lucia Buns before, nor ever had an excuse to splurge for saffron, so this was a fun experiment. The only downside was that the recipe produced more dough than I could ever anticipate using. (It easily provided 10 times more than I expected.)
