Dominus 1994
I acquired this bottle in 1998. I put it through all kinds of abuse. Last night I had some people over and a couple were twin brothers, both wine enthusiasts, one actually a sommelier. They took a look at my collection and I told them they were welcome to open whatever they liked. One of the suggestions was this, so I figured we might as well do a mini vertical and open the 2002 as well.
I had low expectations, warning them that there was a good chance both bottles would be cooked (I don't own a Cave, nor was I careful to make sure my apartment was always air conditioned during the worst bouts of summer in some years). We took a chance and opened it anyway. Wow. It was truly amazing. At first nose it was wonderfully mellow and round, with notes of bitter chocolate. Later we were getting leather and bitter dry orange. It was clear this wine had an assertive structure with an incredibly savory umami finish. Everyone was blown away.
