Empty chairs
This photo shows part of the Empty Chair Monument in Krakow, Poland. It’s located in the Ghetto Heroes Square and the 68 chairs represent the 68,000 Jews who were transported to concentration camps or killed, when the ghetto was emptied from 1942 onwards.
Two meanings are given for the use of chairs. First, as people were moved, their homes were ransacked and belongings such as chairs and tables littered the area. Second, the empty chairs symbolize the wait before extermination at the death camps.
