5987 Dragon Research Compound
"This is a dragon right? I mean, the teacher said there were dragons somewhere in this area."
"It must be - looks similar to the one we caught earlier! He'll be so proud of us."
Entry for the "Every Set Could be a Castle Set" category of the Summer Joust, based on set 5987: Dino Research Compound. I tried to transfer most of the set's main details to this moc, focusing especially on the building, bridge, and landscaping layout. Of course compared to the original I tried to make the moc much more coherent and clean.
Obvious take would have been to just convert all the dinos to dragons, but I thought it would be funnier and more interesting to have the researchers studying a bunch of random animals with no idea what a dragon actually looks like. On a side note, this approach also worked best with the base size which is quite large (exactly the same size as the set actually), but still doesn't have that much empty space for the dragons (in the original set, the dinos and vehicles aren't even on the base).
A few more technical details - the top of the central tower is the most complicated part technically (other than perhaps the dragon and bridge), using vertical 1x4 brackets to place the mixels joints at the right offsets. Probably would be much simpler using 1x1 brackets but I have none. Bridge is also about half upside down and took quite a long time to get a good design. Also the technic brick pattern on the base actually originally was because I was going to have a round section of the base in front and needed them for technical reasons, but I ended up liking the pattern and kept them even after removing the round part.
Also, I wanted to get a comparison picture between the original and this moc, but I thoroughly underestimated how hard it would be to photograph something this size.
One more entry, which i've been working on for like 5-6 weeks now*, coming hopefully? Either late tomorrow or saturday?
*this is actually true, if you count starting on it like 6 weeks ago for 2 hours then not touching it again until last night as "working on it"... also, meant to have 2 more entries so that I could have one entry per category, but this moc + the castle scene in my collab took me way longer than I had expected. Anyway, enjoy!
