Bollwerk Andernach | Bulwark Andernach
Das Bollwerk wurde zwischen 1659 und 1661 von dem aus Graubünden stammenden Werkmeister Caspar Boltern erbaut. Als Zollstätte diente das Bauwerk zur Kontrolle des Schifffahrt auf dem Rhein und als Eisbrecher zum Schutz der Stadtmauer. Das sich heute auf dem Bollwerk befindliche Ehrenmal für die Opfer der beiden Weltkriege wurde nach den Plänen von F. Brantzky (Rotunde 1928-1930) geschaffen. 1970/71 erfolgte eine Umgestaltung (Bodenrelief „Apokalypse“ von Udo Weingart).
The Bulwark was built between 1659 and 1661 by the master craftsman Caspar Boltern from the Grisons canton of Switzerland. It was used as a customs post to control shipping on the Rhine and also acted as an ice-breaker to protect the city walls. It is now topped by a war memorial to the victims of both World Wars designed by F. Brantzky (rotunda 1928-1930). In 1970/71 the building was redesigned (Apocalypse floor relief by Udo Weingart).
