¡Ay, Chihuahua!
The full moon rises over the Chihuahuan Desert and Fort Davis, Texas with the Davis Mountains in the foreground. On the lower left, State Highway 118 follows Limpia Creek, lined with blazing cottonwood trees. In the center is Skyline Drive in Davis Mountains State Park. To the right are restored buildings from the old fort and residences on the edge of the town, which is the county seat of Jeff Davis County.
The rising moon was precursor to the full lunar eclipse in the wee hours of the following morning. Unfortunately, due to haze and thin clouds, the eclipse itself was anticlimactic. Naturally, the following night was crystal clear but just as I happened to look to the west that next morning, the unmistakable International Space Station came into view, traversing the sky from horizon to horizon and passing right in front of the moon as it set over the hillside adjacent to my campsite. Ay, Chihuahua, indeed!
