9 shot pano of the Prop of Ythsie at Christmas eve 2024, sunset, near Tarves, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
I can correct the x-axis geometric distortion easily in Photoshop but that adds curvature to the y-axis distortion which seems impossible to correct properly. Because the land falls away sharply on every side of the tower, there is no alternative but to angle the camera or maybe buy a 10 mm lens.... Any thoughts out there?
The tower sits, fenced in a small enclosure at the apex of a hill with the lands sloping sharply away on all sides. The trees that used to come close to one side have been cleared but even so there is no obvious way (apart from buying a drone cam) to get the Prop and much of a sunset into shot. I do not have a 10 mm lens for my R6mkII...yet, but geometric distortion would be even worse. Of course one could climb into one of the adjoining fields with a2 m high self-standing ladder....but.....not very practical.
The Prop of Ythsie (pronounced “Icy”) is a striking local landmark which stands on the Hill of Ysthie just east of the village of Tarves. The stone tower is visible from many points in the surrounding area of Formartine, including from parts of the Estate. It was built by the tenantry of Haddo in memory of the 4th Earl of Aberdeen, paying tribute to the extensive improvement works he carried out on the Estate for the local residents. It is still in family ownership, though it is maintained by Aberdeenshire Council for the benefit of its numerous visitors. In years gone by a flag was flown from the top of the Ythsie Tower to herald the beginning of the curling season at the Haddo House Curling Club. haddoestate.com/history/heritage/prop-of-ythsie/
