Wartime Mancunian 596.

Manchester 596 in an odd pose for what looks like an official MCTD photograph. Probably taken in Stevenson Square given the route. 596 appears to have a replacement painted steel radiator shell with a more prominent V at the top in the style of the postwar radiator shell. It has lost its nearside headlamp and a blackout mask covers the offside one. It does not appear to have had a repaint since prewar given the fine brown lining out visible on the upper deck front panel.

This batch of 56 buses 546-601 were intended to be the first Streamliners, but given MCTD's urgency for new buses Metro Cammell offered earlier delivery on those built as Standards thus only 551-564 were built as Streamliners, the remainder as Standards.

A sign of the evolving Crossley is the ribbing on the nearside mudguard, a feature that was carried over to late postwar buses and coaches.
