Duomo (exterior)

The façade of Orvieto's famous duomo is reputedly one of the best in the land. The mosaics include scenes decorated in gold leaf. Similar to Siena's duomo, the insides and outside are striped marble. Many of the cathedral's windows are made of thin sheets of alabaster, glowing a rich honey-gold in the sun from the inside (but appearing like flat rock from the outside). Orvieto's duomo remains second on my list, below Siena's, as favourite church in Italy. One disappointment - you could not take pictures inside the Signorelli chapel, and they sold no guidebooks to illustrate this remarkably frescoed chapel.
