the core principal of star trek, the ideology upon which so much great (and some not quite so great) science fiction was based was this: the survival of the species must become independent of the survival of the planet and we must all unite to make that possible.
we must spread life to the cosmos, spread and evolve across the surface of countless worlds, a spark in the darkness spreading like wildfire, igniting the universe in a glow of sentience. interplanetary civilization (after post human consciousness and brain networking) is the next step in our species evolution. and while we may never meet any vulcans or sexy orion women or tribbles or gorn, our destiny is in the stars. give it a few million years and you won't even recognize us any more.
