spalted teak pen

Experimenting with light sources to create dynamic shadows on this subject: a spalted teak hand-turned pen I got quite a few years ago. Teak can spalt but usually does not as it is quite weather-resistant due to the oils within the wood itself.

Spalting is when a soft or hard wood develops a type of fungal infection that affects the look of the wood (banding, splattering, darker spots on the wood). Given teak woods natural oils to repel natural attacks (water rot, insect, mold, and fungi), it doesn't happen often but it does show up in some stock wood pieces for wood-turning.

Image was taken with my Sony 50 mm macro lens at a 1:1 ratio. The light source is a Lume Cube (with a domed diffuser) about three inches away from the pen tip so some light was spilling on the side of the pen closest to the lens. I've been very pleased with the Lume Cube for the projects I've used it on. It is a fairly versatile light source that pushes out just the right amount of lumens for the project. And it's waterproof!!

The bokeh behind the pen was not intentional but given the short physical distance between the subject and the lens, it is not surprising that some "pleasing circles" showed up.
