I got the following info from Wikipedia:
The Begijnhof is one of the oldest inner courts in Amsterdam, originally a Beguinage, founded in the middle ages. Today it is also the site of the English Reformed Church. The Begijnhof (Beguine court) is at medieval street level, which means it is a meter below the rest of the old city centre. It has 47 regular townhouses each with an individual aspect and most with 17th and 18th century facades. about 18 of them still possess a gothic wooden framework. Most of the houses had just one single room but now most have been enlarged to 2 or 3 rooms.
