Antarctica's Lemaire Channel
After a two-day crossing of the Drake Passage from Tierra del Fuego at the tip of South America, our ship entered the wild, mountainous and remote waters of the Antarctic Peninsula. In this photo, we are maneuvering down Antarctica's beautiful Lemaire Channel on the way to an Antarctic Circle crossing the next day.
It was a beautiful austral summer day: calm, mostly sunny with the temperature around 40°F (4°C). The landscape was amazing and there was wildlife everywhere! It was light 24 hours a day with the sun only skimming below the horizon for a couple hours after midnight. In these conditions, “the golden hour” was an almost a constant companion, and sleep seemed an inconvenience when you couldn’t take photos.
The Lemaire Channel can usually only be navigated in a portion of the Antarctic summer, because of frequent icebergs, pack ice and drift ice that can interfere with navigation in the strait.
