The Moai of Rano Raraku On Rapa Nui (Explore #137)
You feel as if you are being watched when you stand in the presence of these Moai at Rano Raraku on Easter Island. The Moai in this image are still in the quarry where almost all of the island's 897 Moai were made and then later transported throughout the island.
This quarry is a World Heritage Site where Rapa Nuian craftsmen would begin cutting and shaping the Moai from the volcanic ash (tuff) hillsides. These figures are full length Moai that over the years have been partially buried by sediment washed down from the hillsides.
