Having not lost the entire season in the Big South, Winthrop held on to beat 6th seeded VMI on the Eagles home court by a score of 84-81. VMI missed a three point shot at the buzzer to tie.
Winthrop (28-4), will now wait to find where it will be seeded in the NCAA national basketball championship tournament. For the moment, the Eagles can enjoy their 7th Big South conference tournament championship in nine years, and third straight.
