Staffelsee (1920)

More paintings by Gabriele Münter (1877-1962), the German painter whose work I discovered while visiting the Milwaukee Art Museum. I have become a huge admirer of her work. Once engaged to Kandinsky, she was at the forefront of the Munich avant-garde Expressionist movement known as the Blue Rider Group. Expressionists were painters who used strong color and exaggerated form to express themselves. When the Nazis came to power, her work like that of her modernist contemporaries, was condemned as degenerate. Her paintings include many powerful landscapes and figure studies as well as striking still lifes. This painting is at the Milwaukee Art Museum, a wonderful museum with a superb permanent collection.
