Manufacturer's Railway Company(MRS)

An MRS switcher sitting at an industrial yard along the Riverfront Trail, at the BNSF owned line.

Today, Sunday, April 11, 2010, we took a bike ride up the Riverfront Trail, and I got some cool pictures of downtown St. Louis, including of Laclede's Landing, the Arch, and other major downtown buildings. :)

This is a very interesting rebuild, and ex-Alco with an EMD engine.

Sadly, the Manufacturer's Railway, the railroad owned and operated by Anhueser Bush since its inception in 1887, has come to a shutdown after 124 years of service. This railroad services the Budweiser brewery on a 2 mile spur and a few other spurs in the St. Louis area as well to service local customers, and is shutting down, running its last beer shipment on what was known as "the beer railroad" on March 13, 2011. They own 13.5 miles of spur lines around the St. Louis area, many of which service customers which have shut down or switched to trucking. It has gained federal permission to shut down operations from the Federal Railroad Administration, and in return will leave the rails intact (had they not gotten permission, they simply would have torn out all of their owned track and sold all of their rolling stock to become nothing more than a paper entity), and BNSF Railway and possibly the St. Louis Terminal Railroad(TRRA) company will now be the service providers for the remaining customers on these spurs. Even the spur to the brewery itself, in the Sulard area (south side) of St. Louis will still continue to be serviced by rail; although not for beer shipments, it still will take in deliveries of an average 6 train cars of grain, celite, and magnesite daily. Currently the brewer is the only customer left on the railroad, so the impact of the closure (since it is owned by Budweiser) will be minimal, if any at all. However, 37 people were employed by the railroad, and now have to look for other work. This is more sad news for the St. Louis area's historic Anhueser Bush company, which in the summer of 2008 was bought out by Belgian company InBev.
