The Underboss

This was definitely the portrait that I immediately had a vision of this week. As soon as I saw one of the example portraits that I found for the week, I knew I had to do something like this. I'm super happy with how it turned out. It is taken in the 4th level of a parking garage in downtown tempe. I originally planned to take it outside at the old flour mill, but it was looking like it was about to start pouring rain so we quickly moved into the parking garage instead.

Lit with a 160-LED battery powered light bank with blue gel above her hand and a 240W equivalent soft box off camera to the right. Lots of color adjustments, retouching, and fire compositing done in Photoshop. The fire was photographed by soaking a tennis ball in lighter fluid, skewering and mounting it, lighting it on fire, and then taking photos.

You can add emotional/conceptual depth to an image in many ways. In this one, I tried to use the colors, value, and pose to create the feeling that the subject was a powerful mage.
