Methoni was known from the time of Homer already, who mentions it as one of the seven towns that were promised to Achilles by Agamemnon, to appease his anger and persuade him to go back to the battle. Pausanias and Stravon call it Mothoni and identify it as the Homeric town.
Methoni war schon aus der Zeit Homers bekannt, der es als eine der sieben Städte erwähnt, die Agamemnon Achilles versprochen hatte, um seinen Zorn zu besänftigen und ihn zu überreden, in die Schlacht zurückzukehren. Pausanias und Stravon nennen es Mothoni und identifizieren es als die homerische Stadt.
Η Μεθώνη ήταν ήδη γνωστή από την εποχή του Ομήρου, ο οποίος την αναφέρει ως μία από τις επτά πόλεις που υποσχέθηκαν στον Αχιλλέα από τον Αγαμέμνονα, για να κατευνάσει την οργή του και να τον πείσει να επιστρέψει στη μάχη. Ο Παυσανίας και ο Στράβων αποκαλούν το Μοθόνι και το αναγνωρίζουν ως την ομηρική πόλη.
