Western Highlands tribes, PNG, Sep 2019

One of the Western Highlands tribes was depicted in the documentary called Highlands Trilogy. The first movie called "First Contact" portrays events from the early 1930s when gold prospectors from Queensland, Australia encountered indigenous tribes living in then inhabitable place now called Mount Hagen. Tribes were very curious about white men and happy to trade potatoes, pigs, and women for steel axes and shells difficult to come by in the mountains region. They also benefited from white men building an airstrip that opened up opportunities for further trade. The trilogy tells the story of the first contact and the tribal way of life crushed by colonialism. Footage for the movies was obtained from the Australians that made the first contact.
