Love Bites (photo and poem)
If you know anything about beagles, you know that they are just about the loudest dogs there are. In fact, some sources indicate that “beagle” is derived from Old French for “big mouth.” I don't know about that, but when Larry bays, you can hear him all over the neighborhood. And though Larry never growls at me, he rumbles like a rusty freight train when Cowboy gets near his dinner. As many of you know, Larry was a hungry, tick-ridden stray who appeared at my son's door out of nowhere in the deep dark Kentucky woods, hitched a ride to my house, and is here to this day. Contrary to the poem, Larry never bites; but as the poem says, he does keep me warm at night (he sleeps on my feet), yet he's actually too lazy to follow me all day—although I'm sure his love does. Would that we were all as loved by our humans as we are by our dogs, and would that we were as loving!
Love Bites (In honor of Larry)
I may growl like a devil,
But I've got an angel's heart.
And there, you are my valentine—
I've known it from the start.
My love will keep you warm at night
And follow you all day.
My bark's much deeper than my bite,
And my heart will never stray.
