The Banquet

 

The board is laid

With subtlest care;

Take up your plate,

And taste the fare.

 

Here is revenge,

Served cold of course,

And anger stewed

Without remorse.

 

Here is malice,

Garnished with lies,

And gossip baked

In spicy pies.

 

Mounds of envy,

Piles of hate

To tantalize

But never sate.

 

Though such may

Fatly fool the eye,

Those who partake

Will find them dry.
