Bill's Arcade v2 & Disney's Wreck-it Ralph

On Friday, my daughter turned 7. Also on Friday, Disney's Wreck-It Ralph debuted in theaters...

In the Birthday tradition of letting her pick what we'd do, she opted for Chik-fil-A and the movies to see Disney's nod to the arcades of the 80's and 90's.

For awhile, I really felt as if Disney had lost their touch. The movies they have released were entertaining for kids but lacked that Disney Magic. On the other hand, Pixar was killing it with blockbuster after blockbuster, delivering fun moviegoing experiences by using cutting-edge technology to deliver exceptional stories.

Obviously I'm partisan on the topic of Arcades but with this movie, I have to say -- Disney is back.

I credit John Lasseter.

Having once worked for Disney before loosing a creative/political battle, Steve Jobs recognized John's passion & talent after acquiring Pixar from LucasFilm. Now that Pixar and Disney are one (Lucasfilm, too, amazingly enough) -- I feel like John's attention to storytelling and wonderful styling really came through in Wreck-it-Ralph. A nod to Rich Moore for a job-well-done, too!

Some of the characters (particularly a little girl named Vanellope) really resonate with an actual quirky human-ness which is ironic given the nesting doll of a video game avatar masquerading as a cartoon character, emulating a human in a virtual racing game..

At any rate, with numerous cameos inside of Wreck-It Ralph of video game villains and heros that many of us grew up playing -- this movie was an epic nod to a dwindled piece of decades-past Americana.

I for one feel there is still a place for Arcades in our culture, perhaps done a little differently. Perhaps I'll find investment one of these cycles to explore this further.. :)

At any rate, Jena's birthday was rounded out with some video game fun with a close friend in our own basement-play room. A recent shot of which is here and video tour below...
