Design study: MT-1 Matriarch

A closer look at the design elements of my walkers (mechs).

I'd say my general inspiration is one part Battletech, particularly icons like the Locust, Marauder, Raven, etc; one part HR Giger, the grand master of dark biological machines; one part modern military; and infinite parts all the random sci-fi I've been inundated with since childhood.

As the first battle walker ever recovered, and re-fielded by the Revenant Sisterhood, I wanted the Matriarch -- named after the leader of the Church -- to appear more "conventional" than follow up models, i.e. more straight-up armour panels and less greebles.

Design-wise, I was thinking of an underlying chopper/gunship style, with a tapered front and realistic angles, while maintaining overall chunkiness. After much googling and some poking of fellow mocers for advice (thanks Horcik! www.flickr.com/photos/112259733@N07/) I think I got there, using hinges plus a lot of wedges to achieve a completely enclosed, tapered forward section. I think my favourite element though is the armour texture achieved by wrapping the "shoulder" joints in tank treads. And of course hoses, lots of hoses...

I'd love feedback. Please leave a comment or annotation if you have a moment.
