Old town Stockholm
Gamla stan, until 1980 officially Staden mellan broarna, is Stockholm's city centre, built on Stadsholmen. Sometimes Riddarholmen is also included in Gamla stan, but it forms a separate district. Helgeandsholmen and Strömsborg belong to the Gamla stan district. For several hundred years, Gamla stan constituted the actual city. Gamla stan as a whole has been protected since a government decision made on 23 December 1980, classified as of national interest for cultural environmental value by the Riksantikvarieämbetet.
Stockholm was founded in the 13th century, and was built within the large castle complex that Birger Jarl had built as a "lock" for Mälaren. At the city's main square, Stortorget, a town hall was built and behind this the city church - the oldest part of Storkyrkan. From the square there were streets leading to the city gates. The most important, Köpmansporten, led down to the harbor at Saltsjön.
Gamla stan was for a long time the city in contrast to the more rural surroundings, the ores (Norrmalm, Södermalm and Östermalm).
Only in the 17th century had the old fortifications played out their role, and after a devastating fire in the south-western part in 1625, extensive modernization work was initiated in the centre. wikipedia
