Giants Causeway panorama, Ireland 2018
Our Irish adventure took us along a lot of narrow (but fast!) roads north to the Giants Causeway on the north coast. It's a 60-million year old volcanic lava flow that cracked to form columnar basalt as it cooled. Each of the thousands of hexagonal columns (a form of polygonal cracking) is about 10-20 inches in diameter. It's a major tourist attraction, and not just for geologists. Oddly enough, the visitors' centre is a little lacking in geologic explanation, focussing more on history and mythology. But walking the rock formation itself is of course the real attraction.
