112: Decision Time
Today was an incredibly busy and exciting day. A slew of people from Minnesota's Congressional Delegation and other important folks took turns speaking to the convention. The two Senate candidates debated in the morning. The floor was buzzing with activity as staffers from both campaigns worked furiously to win over last-second votes for their candidates. The vote finally happened in the early afternoon. I was unsure of my vote until moments before the time came.
I ultimately voted for Al Franken, and he received the required 60% of the vote in order to secure the DFL endorsement on the first ballot. My decision was in no way due to faults on the part of Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer. If I was confident enough that this race could be won by any Democrat with a good heart, he may very well have received my vote. However, in a moment of painful realism, I decided that Franken had made enough progress to date in mobilizing his campaign that he would be much more prepared to take on the Republican machine and Norm Coleman in the fall. Also, he convinced me during the debate today that his platform and policy ideas were better suited for today's political atmosphere. Part of my job now this summer will be working to get him elected. I hope I can help him pull it off.
