Machynlleth
The final class of steam locomotive to be allocated to the Cambrian was the 76xxx BR Standard 4MT Class 2-6-0 which initially worked in from Shrewsbury before three examples were allocated to Machynlleth from Saltley in the West Midlands on the 18th of June 1966. Nos 76038 76043 and 76083 boosted the much depleted Machynlleth allocation for the last summer of steam operation. They were quickly put to work on the last remaining steam services along the coast plus they did their share of hauling the remaining summer specials to and from Shrewsbury including the Cambrian Coast Express services. However, with the emergence of the English Type 3 diesel locomotives, the fate of Nos 76038 & 76043 was sealed, being withdrawn on the 10th of September 1966. No 76083 was allocated to Croes Newydd on the same day only to be withdrawn two weeks later 24th September 1966.
In the shot, Nos 76038 and 76043 were photographed at Machynlleth on August 13th 1966
