To lie in ambush on a brigalow dawn

An adult male Common Death Adder (Acanthophis antarcticus) lies motionless in an ambush posture at the base of a Casuarina stump in the dappled light of the forest floor at dawn. He will attempt to lure potential prey within striking range by wriggling his orange tail tip seductively; in mimicry of a worm or grub. Small birds, carnivorous marsupial mice and lizards are all on the menu.

Taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark 3 DSLR coupled to a vintage C/Y Yashica ML 55/2.8 Macro lens with a third-party adapter. Hand-held with manual settings, manual focus and reflected side-lighting utilized.
