Monkey King
We met the Monkey King outside Kenwood Cafe, one of our favorite neighborhood stomping grounds.
He was alternating between playing his guitar and drinking coffee. I complimented him on one of his songs and we started talking.
He said his mother gave him the name Monkey King when he was a little boy because he used to climb on everything. One day she was dropping him off at school and yelled out the window to "Have a good day Monkey King!".
As you can imagine, the name instantly stuck and all the kids started calling him that. He was smart enough to know it wasn't worth fighting, so instead he joined them and accepted the fate of being called Monkey King for the rest of his adolescence.
You can find him playing music at various bars around Minneapolis.
This picture is #006 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100Strangers.com
