2014 Night Sky Photography Workshops

The Aurora Borealis, Milky Way, Andromeda Galaxy, and a lone Perseid meteor over Moccasin Lake in Eagle Cap Wilderness. Wallowa–Whitman National Forest, Oregon

This was a very challenging image and I'm still not completely sold on the results. This area of Oregon has the least amount of light pollution I've ever witnessed and had the pleasure of photographing. Just as I was about to retire for the night, the aurora borealis decided to make an appearance, casting a beautiful display in the distance and reflecting off the lake. The foreground was the biggest challenge trying to bring out detail in such dark conditions. If there had been a crescent moon, it would have brought just enough light to bring out the foreground. I'm sure this will be one of those images I re-process in a few months.
