Workshop

Clay Mill's pumping station offers visitors a rare glimpse into victorian industry. Periodic harsh metallic noises ring out reinforcing the working conditions suffered here. Greasy textures, sometimes smooth and sometimes sharp but always cold reinforce assumptions of those tough times. And everywhere, the smell of grease pervades. That smell was my most memorable sensation during my only visit to date.

Still cameras can't capture smell nor sound. They can however illustrate form and texture. From polished gauges and pistons, through greasy axles and cogs, to beams and supports covered in wonderful patina, the place is a treasure trove for photography.
