Caboose at the Junction

Just north of Redmond, Oregon on the Oregon Trunk, Prineville Junction is the site where the City of Prineville Railway interchanges traffic with BNSF and Union Pacific. In 1990, when this picture was taken, Burlington Northern was the dominant presence on the Oregon Trunk. There was still enough traffic in Central Oregon for UP to run a tri-weekly road freight from The Dalles down to Bend.

In the past quarter century, Central Oregon has seen most of its industry wither. The old industrial district in Bend is now a trendy shopping mall. UP trains no longer run to Bend. Any lingering UP business in the area is now handled by BNSF. Although the timber industry in Prineville is not what it used to be, COP soldiers on.
