Oldham Corporation 244 has a bit of a bump
If you are a bus operator running over a hundred buses all day long, the odd accident is inevitable. Fortunately most involve only bent metal, and although 244's contretemps with a saloon car seems to be a fairly minor affair, it has drawn quite a crowd - no doubt many from the pub in the right background.
We're not sure who was to blame, and we're also unsure where the photo was taken except that it was probably between Oldham and Middleton Junction station - the location is still known as this even though both the station and the railway junction are long gone.
The pub is called the Colliers Arms - and there is a Colliers Arms to this day in Chadderton on Old Lane, although the building has been relocated.
The bus is on route 'B' - until the mid 1960s, Oldham was unusual in that many of its bus routes were lettered, not numbered.
Oldham 246, delivered at the same time as 244 here, survives today and is in storage at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester.
